03 / Story, the world

Story: Dawnbreak

A young green planet. A city built round a lake. A roof of glass hexagons over it, and a school under the roof. This is where the story happens.

Where you are

Move across the Sphere

  • A young planet, green and bright, with a blue lake and a wide sea.

  • The last great city left on Dawnbreak, built around a lake that opens into the sea.

  • The school that teaches young women to fight the Enders, built where Selrick Base once stood.

  • A lattice of glowing hexagons over Terrinia, like a roof of glass. It keeps out the Enders.

01 / Places

Where it happens

Nine places the story keeps returning to. This is an index, not a map.

Place 01 of 09

The gantry

Layla's secret base, seventy metres up the Academy tower. On a clear morning you can watch the sun rise out of the sea.

02 / Before and after

That was before

Dawnbreak in 978, and Oro. Each calm claim stands until the story crosses it out. Scroll, drag the slider, or hold the button to look back.

Dawnbreak, 978

A peaceful world

In those days, Dawnbreak was a young, bright world. Its people built fast. They had tall towers and flying machines. There was no Defence Sphere over Terrinia then. Nobody had ever heard the word Ender.

That was before.

It was the year 978. The first catastrophe had begun, and the sky of Dawnbreak began to scream.

01 / 05Dawnbreak

First Light

Dawnbreak had a festival called First Light. At dusk, people set paper lanterns on the water and made a wish. Then the sea looked like a field of fallen stars.

The ninth of September

The night of the ninth of September, 978.

02 / 05Dawnbreak

The Planet of Gold

Oro's capital, Dorado, lay under a huge glass dome. Every morning at six, amber lamps round the rim began to glow, and golden light fell on the streets. It looked like sunshine. It was not.

The Cleansing of Oro

Dome after dome fell. The Enders walked out of the storm, black and gold and taller than towers. Oro sent in the Legion, but it was not a battle. It was a harvest. Millions died.

03 / 05Oro

Seas, forests and a blue sky

Long ago, it had seas, forests and a blue sky.

Thin and brown

The air outside the Domes was thin and brown, and the planet was running out of food and fuel.

04 / 05Oro

Graduation day

The morning of the ceremony was bright. It was the first week of September.

All worlds will be weighed

All worlds will be weighed.

05 / 05Selrick Academy

An old skipping rhyme from Dawnbreak

When the towers grow high and the wheels grow loud, When the people forget they are small, The sky will break, and the Enders come, To end the world, and begin it all.

03 / The Cycle

It happens again

Four stages, one loop. Turn the ring to read each one.

Stage 1 of 4Chapter 24

A world grows

A world builds fast and grows too advanced. When one world races ahead of the others, the web of worlds starts to tear.

A world grows too advanced.
Ch 31

EmbersThe few lives the Cycle spares on purpose, so that a broken world can grow again.

This was the Cycle. A world grows too advanced. A catastrophe comes. Most of it is destroyed, and a few embers are spared. The survivors rebuild. Then it happens again.

04 / The hierarchy

Who gives the orders

A mind, a body, a commander, the hands, and one device. Pick a layer.

Layer 1 of 5 / The mind

The Will of the Planet

Born when the Twilight Orb broke and its energy woke in the dark between the stars. It does not hate. It wants balance, and it resets worlds that grow too fast.

Layer 2 of 5 / The body

The Mother Matrix

A vast, cold web hidden in the void. It turns the Will's thoughts into orders, grows the Enders, and calls them home when the work is done.

Layer 3 of 5 / The commander

Obsidia

The first Ender to wake. The Will made her its Imperatrix. She commands the fleets from the Storm Citadel, and while the others sleep, she stays awake.

Layer 4 of 5 / The hands

The Enders

Living weapons grown by the Matrix, with dark armour and violet fire in their veins. They feel no hate, and they obey the orders they are given.

  • Ultra EndersThe biggest, taller than houses. Each one has a seam at the neck.Ch 5
  • WardensThey carry a device in the chest and pass down orders from far away.Ch 12
  • HuntersLong black darts with one amber eye. They hang above a fight and fire down.Ch 42
  • The GuardianA giant made by the Will long ago. He obeys the voice that holds him while his golden halo burns.Ch 29
  • Humanoid EndersObsidia's experiments, grown in vats in the Chamber of Likenesses. Most of them did not live.Prologue

The canon notes also name Soldiers, Heavy-class and Blades among the ordinary kinds.

Device / not a being

The Ender Control Core

Not a being. A crystal that turns orders into the Enders' own language, so its holder can command ordinary Enders. It cannot bind Obsidia. The Will took it back into its own dark void. Where it is now, and whether it can be broken, are left open.

05 / Aspirant power lab

One plus one is more than two

Two Aspirants who hold on to each other give more than the two of them added up. Pull the crystals together and watch the reading.

08 / What the story leaves open

Still sealed

Three questions. The story ends with hope, not with an answer. Break a seal to read what it says.

  • Guinevere believes it has. The story does not say so. The silver net still hangs over Terrinia.

  • The Will took it back into its own dark void. Nobody knows where it is.

  • Nobody saw how their fight ended. A woman keeps a lamp lit on an old bell tower.

These are open on purpose. The story does show one thing: Karina keeps a lamp burning on the bell tower. Someone is always waiting.
